Responsible for managing three of Ovum’s core telecoms research topic areas: Wireline Strategy, Wholesale and Regulation. Having managed two of these teams directly in the past, I was appointed Practice Leader for these three areas. This involved managing a team of nine analysts, overseeing the research done in each of the three teams, ensuring content delivery was on schedule, driving revenue growth through client interactions and other tasks.

September 2005 – April 2008, Vice President, US Enterprise Practice, Ovum, Boston, MA

Combination of responsibilities, including leading Ovum’s North American enterprise telecom research, acting as client partner to three key accounts (Cisco, AT&T, Verizon) and providing sales support for other accounts, and managing the Boston office. August 2004 – September 2005, Research Director, Telecom, North America, Ovum, Boston, MA

Leading Ovum’s research on wireline telecom in North America, and working at a high level with Ovum’s wireline telecom clients in North America. Personally covered the US enterprise market and the global market for serving multinational corporations, in addition to work on voice over IP. Successfully helped grew our major accounts by up to 100% in a year, and won major consulting projects with our clients during this time.

January 2003 – August 2004, Senior Analyst and Service Manager, WirelineStrategy@Ovum, London, UK

Managing Ovum’s flagship telecoms advisory service, analysing and advising on strategy for wireline telecoms providers. Personal topic expertise in broadband, the US market, the UK market, and regulation. Managing a team of five analysts, with responsibility for personal development and motivation of staff, generating and publishing content and liasing with colleagues and clients. Annual service revenues for 2003 around £650,000 (US$1.15 million), 2004 revenues at £770,000 (US$1.4 million) following 20% decline from 2002 to 2003. Successfully recruited two staff and maintained high client renewal rate (around 90%).

Skills

During my over ten years at Ovum, I have developed many new skills and had opportunities to demonstrate and hone existing skills.

I have contributed (and continue to contribute) to Ovum’s regulatory, strategy, consumer, enterprise and wholesale telecom services and practices. I have become very familiar with both the European and North American markets at first hand, and have also worked with AP clients and colleagues as a service manager and during client meetings in Asia.

I have also had a wide range of management experience, from managing two advisory services to managing a US research schedule for multiple analysts and now managing the Boston office. In all these roles I have had to manage both man-day and cash budgets and have always kept costs effectively under control while driving growth. I have managed around a dozen different people in different roles (analysts, marketing, HR, CRMs) during my time at Ovum and demonstrated effective people management skills.

Over the last several years, as I have been largely in management roles, I have also focused my own research agenda on mobile devices – especially smartphones – and the platforms that run on them. I have presented at several Ovum seminars on this topic and work closely with Ovum’s devices team on its forecasts in this area.

During my time with Ovum in North America in particular, but also previously as a service manager, I have had to develop acute commercial skills and focus. I have worked closely with individual account managers and the sales team as a whole to win new accounts, develop and grow existing accounts and build and maintain relationships. This has required client presentations – both sales and research content – and I am very comfortable doing both of these things.

I have worked in teams throughout my work at Ovum and previously and find this environment an enjoyable one. I enjoy managing people and processes and getting the best possible results out of my team. I work to tight deadlines (and help others do the same), while working to high standards. I speak four languages: Spanish, German, French and English; I am also able to understand several more, including Italian, Portuguese and Dutch.

Interests

I am an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have various responsibilities as a part-time volunteer, including teaching, leadership and training. In addition, I enjoy current affairs and politics, various sports and family life.
